John C. Spier is a private investor and serves as Chairman of the Board of MileStone Bank, a de novo bank in Dolestown, PA which opened in November 2007. He began his banking career in 1973 at the Greenwich Savings Bank in New York, NY. He joined Bucks County Bank & Trust Co., in Doylestown, PA in 1975 as a management trainee. After assuming additional responsibilities over the next twelve years, he was appointed President & CEO in 1987. Mr. Spier left Bucks County Bank & Trust Co., which at the time had total assets of $1.2 billion, in 1994 prior to its holding company, Independence Bancorp, Inc. being acquired by CoreStates Financial Corp.
Mr. Spier founded FirstService Bank in 1995 and by mid-2002, the bank had approximately $400 million of assets and seven branches. FirstService also owned an insurance agency and an investment management firm. In September 2002, FirstService announced that it had agreed to be acquired by National Penn Bancshares, Inc. in a stock and cash transaction valued at $95 million. This price produced a total return of 5.02 times FirstService charter shareholders' original investment, or a compound average annual growth rate of their investment of 25.2% during the Bank's seven years as an independent company. Mr. Spier has served on the boards of Bucks County Bank & Trust Co., FirstService Bank, and National Penn Bancshares, Inc., and on the executive committee of the Pennsylvania Bankers Association. He currently serves as an elder of Hilltown Baptist Church and is on the board of The Christian Counseling Center of Bucks County, The King's College, and The King's College Foundation. Mr. Spier is a graduate of The King's College.
